Tattooing is an ancient practice in Burma. In the past, Burmese soldiers tattooed their faces in order to impress their opponents in combat and to give themselves courage. The symbols were tattooed on the back of their necks to identify the troop to which they belonged. Women, on the other hand, also wore facial tattoos. There are various legends as to why women tattooed their faces.

Chin folkloreassumes that facial markings were used to make women less attractive. This discouraged in particular the feudal kings to kidnap the young women of the village, then during colonization, to push back the British who sought to attack them. In case they were kidnapped, the inks became a sign to distinguish the Chin women from the women of other tribes. Yet, according to another legend, tattoos were a symbol of feminine beautyand courage, allowing young women to find wealthy husbands. The last legend is associated with an ancient religious tradition. From the time of British colonization at the end of the 19th century, most Chin people practiced a mixture of Christianity and animism. Gradually, the local pastors began to explain to the locals that only those with facial tattoos would gain their access to heavenafter their death.
