Petrified wood is composed of fossilized woodwhere the organic matterhas more or less completely been replaced by minerals(most often silicates, such as quartz, but also pyrite, etc.), while retaining more or less completely the original anatomical structure of wood.

The petrificationprocess occurs when the wood is buried under a layer of sediment, where it first retains due to a lack of oxygen, before mineral-rich water circulates in the sediment and permeates little. to little wood cells of minerals. These then crystallize optionally, in various ways. It probably takes less than a hundred years for some pieces of wood to be petrified ⁴, but the process could also sometimes be much longer, including phases of recrystallization.

Not all fossil woods are petrified, for example when they are stored as lignite.
